About Me
John Fox is a technology journalist who chronicles news, product reviews and commentary on the latest the technology industry has to offer via his blog at www.TechYuppie.com. In addition, he produces high-quality editorial content about tech and general geekery as Editor-in-Chief of IndyGeek.
Here is a statement of my ethics and coverage policies:
Since the age of 6, I was helping my dad build computers from scratch and since 12 I’ve been coding and designing websites. In February 2008, I started New Media Designs as a sole proprietorship, offering web design and new media consulting to businesses of all sizes. In April 2009, NMD became a Limited Liability Partnership with the addition my wife, Crystina Fox. Together, we retooled to become a production house for the best netcasts and podcasts about technology you can find on the Internet. Our motto was “Netcasts made by geeks for geeks.” Our flagship product was IndyGeek.net – the premier resource for all things geek in Indianapolis.
In order to serve the best interests of our readers and to keep the brand growing, IndyGeek.net became the sole business entity in 2010 and the New Media Designs brand was dissolved.
Ethical standards with regards to reporting provides that a journalist must avoid any conflict of interest that make his or her view less than objective with regard to the subject matter. As such, is it my solemn commitment as a technology journalist never to compromise my integrity and that includes avoiding any activity, such as purchase of stock, that may appear to be a conflict of interest. Any tech journalist, true to the ethical code of his profession, must remain beyond reproach.
As an industry professional, I also do not sign non-disclosure agreements in order to review products. I feel that such agreements are a detriment to the true spirit of journalism. If I can not properly review a product and list the bad with the good, then there is no point to review a maker’s product. It is my responsibility to my audience give full disclosure on products, so they can make the best decision – an informed decision. It is also part of my job at IndyGeek to have oversight of sponsorships and advertisers wanting to promote their product on that site. I will always let my readership know when I am mentioning a sponsor in my writing. I will also never directly review a product from a sponsor as this would be a conflict of interest.
I welcome all comments regarding anything I might say on this site. Please keep all comments civil and ensure they do not contain any personal attacks as these will be removed promptly and your user account on Disqus will be permanently banned. We are looking for lively debate and share in the wealth of knowledge the Internet affords us.
